The transmission picks gears quickly, shifts precisely, and downshifts without major throttle input. Where the previous model seemed tuned to get the most out of the EPA cycle, this one seems tuned for actual driving. The biggest improvement in driveability is the throttle response and the transmission programming. It’s not fast by any means, but the mid-range power means there’s no planning to change lanes or merge with traffic. There’s not a lot of torque, but what it has comes on quickly. The 1.5L turbo motor works well and is a better fit than the 2.4L in the outgoing model. My girlfriend’s CRV only averages about 25mpg. The city is supposed to be 28mpg and it came up way short while I had it. The last RAV4 I had for a week averaged about 24, but that was in a different city and may not necessarily be comparable. Much better than my 2011 which averages around 22 or so on this same stop-and-go drive I have each day for work. I checked the MPG when I filled it up today prior to turning it in and I averaged 27.1mpg over 220 miles in all city driving. I am definitely going to miss the MyLink system. Not once did the voice commands misinterpret anything, which was really impressive. Dare I say it’s one of the best systems out there? Yeah, I’ll say it. Overall the interior is much improved and it’s also quieter inside. Whereas the previous model’s interior was a little quirky, the design of the cockpit is well done and follows the conventions of most of the newer Chevys, especially with the steering wheel controls. The surround camera system is excellent and I know that I am going to miss that for sure. I do like the implementation of the electronic parking brake. The vibrating seat is a bit distracting though. The lane assist is pretty neat as is the forward collision alert and automatic braking. It even charges my S8 with the case on! It also has the auto-dimming for the headlights which was pretty fascinating because it works really well. I like the included wireless charging pad that’s part of the cubby under the stereo. There is less hard plastic than before, but it’s still there in out of the way places. The leather is not really any higher quality and that was a little disappointing. The Premiere is loaded with equipment including the massive panoramic sunroof. It’s not too small, but I do wish for the extra space along with the sliding rear seat in the outgoing model. It is a handsome vehicle though, much more so than the previous model. I can comfortably sit in the rear seats of my 2011, but my head is against the headliner in the 2018. The loss of headroom is not too noticeable in the front but it is in the back seat. The 2018 is not as tall and sits lower to the ground than the outgoing model. Not only are they narrow, but the seat bottom is shorter. I am a big guy (6-2, 250) and the inside is smaller and the seats are noticeably narrower. I’d probably take this new Equinox over any of them if they are all equipped with the base engine.įirst of all, it is smaller. My daughter-in-law has a 2017 Sante Fe, my girlfriend has a 2016 CRV, and I’ve had CRVs, RAV4s and Escapes on as rentals recently so I am up on the competition. If I weren’t going to buy a truck next year and the 2.0L were available, it would be VERY difficult to resist buying this new model. ![]() Chevy really stepped up their game on the new Equinox. I’ve driven it for 4 days now and I am very impressed. The dealer gave me a 2018 Equinox Premiere as a loaner with about 1,000 miles on it. He said he does a couple each month and had another Equinox on the lift next to mine. I had a chance to talk to the mechanic who’s doing the repair and he said there's a kit for the repair they replace the pistons and rings, timing chain and tensioner, assorted gaskets, oil and coolant. I dropped my 2011 Equinox (2.4L) off on Monday at the dealer to have the engine fixed under warranty for excessive oil use.
